  • 2.19.07 Still In Beta (Literally) posted in Circle Six Happenings

Beta DeckAs part of a project for one of our clients we are digitizing and preparing for the web 30+ hours of documentary footage, a good portion of which is on BetaCam SP tapes. I, being a Final Cut kind of guy, and us, being a fresh new agency, were unprepared for such a demand. A little work on ebay and some electronic fiddling and we now have a rig for digitizing BetaCam tapes to Flash video. The deck is surprisingly tough. It came in shambles, I pieced it back together and proceeded to drop it, on my hand, while putting it on the rack. It didn’t even blink. I can understand why BetaCam was a strong player in the broadcast world, the quality is pretty darn good for a magnetic tape format. And the decks agility with shuttle and jog is surprising.

  • 2.17.07 Best Thank You Note, Ever posted in Circle Six Happenings

Circle Six StorybeadOne of our clients, RedKlaw Designs, sent us a thank you note yesterday. First, a backstory. Kathy, the woman behind the jewelry that RedKlaw sells, is extremely talented with bead work. She can weave people’s life stories into pendants and charms. In addition to the fantastic jewelry that she makes (yes, I’m proud to have worked with them), she makes “story beads“, which is what she sent us on a keychain. It has “Circle” around the top, two sixes in the middle and 2 computers at the bottom. Honestly, I’m blown away, as this is the absolute coolest thank you note we’ve ever received (no offense to clients who’ve previously sent us thank you notes, they’re all greatly appreciated and cherished). This would be the first time I’ve ever sent a thank you note for a thank you note, though ;-).

  • 2.14.07 I Think I’ve Got It posted in Design

Think and PhotoshopIt has long been a soul wrenching divide in my personality: I love crazy, well designed desktop patterns, and I like to design and work with dark background screens. I like having a ton of windows open, hate minimizing windows and using the dock, but like uncluttered workspaces. I was taught that a designer should work with a 50% grey desktop. Eck, I can’t stand it. So what am I to do? Along comes Think, yet another wonderful piece of mac freeware.

  • 2.13.07 Well Mannered Pets posted in Web Design

The Urbane AnimalI’ve been working on so many sites that when I decided to take a weekend off I couldn’t stop. I ended up starting a redesign on the website for my other business, The Urbane Animal. It’s up now, even though it still needs some tweaking. But I’m pretty happy with it. It’s not very often I get to do a low-traffic site with complete design control ;-).

  • 2.9.07 A new design brewing… posted in Website Updates

New Design Draft 1No, this probably won’t be the actual new design. But it might be the direction I’m heading. I’m feeling like doing a “designer’s” design, with a strong grid, proper line heights, nice typography and a clean layout. No 3D shadows or reflections, just nice Gestalt theory. And maybe I’ll actually get it done once I catch up with all of my client jobs that are waiting in the wings. I’m definitely not complaining about having jobs waiting in the wings, though.

  • 2.7.07 What I did on my vacation… posted in Web Design

So I haven’t posted for a while, and you’re wondering where I’ve been. Maybe not, but I’ll probably tell you anyway. I’ve been completely obsessed with a website I’m working on for a large client, to be unveiled in the next couple of days. I can’t wait. It’s based on ModX with a lot of custom code, a completely custom design and some (if I do say so) ingenious devices for creating a multi-user news/blog site from ModX.

  • 2.1.07 Download Section posted in Website Updates

I’ve added a download section to start aggregating the various things that I put out there. I need to start having permanent pages to refer back to and let people link to so I can stop creating long chains of “this plugin has been updated” paragraphs at the top of old posts. So at the top of this page you’ll find a “Downloads” link that will take you to the new downloads page. New releases will get an announcement post, but this page and its satellite pages will serve as permanent home bases for my work as I learn and improve on it.

  • 12.15.06 Review: Micromat Protege posted in Geekery

A couple of crashes on my G5 and a major slowdown on my G4 Powerbook scared me a little. Disk Warrior 3 really helped, but I’m still waiting for my boot disc to run it on my laptop. In the meantime, I came to the realization that none of the Firewire drives that I […]

  • 11.18.06 Dealing with Unreasonable Demands posted in Design, Web Design

Thank the gods for contracts. I’ve started using (very expensive) contracts with all of my clients. Even the one’s I like ;-). I attach the detailed estimate (the one that they signed) to the signed contract and give them a copy. Indubitably, at the end of a job there come a […]
