Marshall McLuhan’s Ghost
posted in
Web Design
Get a New Browser posted a link to some very cool work today. Check out the page for KSU’s Digital Ethnography class and watch some of the videos. The one titled The Machine is Us/ing Us is an inspiring look at the meaning of Web 2.0. A meaning we may have forgotten in the rush to monetize new technologies. A lot of cynicism has built up around the new face of the web and I found these videos, and some of the responses, to be a refreshing discourse on the new state of human communication. It makes me want to stop marketing and start improving the world, which makes me stop and wonder why I’m not improving the world through my marketing. Food for thought, and possibly a restless night.

Facebook: seeing the bubble from the outside
posted in
General
The debacle over Facebook has made us all take a look at the blogosphere’s connection to the “real” world. How in touch are those inside of the “web 2.0″ bubble? How many times can I use quotation marks in a “post”? Wait and see. What bloggers had originally lauded as a step forward […]

The revolution is a bubble.
posted in
General
The prevailing wisdom right now clearly states that Web 2.0 is a bubble. A “frothy“, “fuzzy” bubble. And all this time I thought it was a revolution… So where does revolution meet the idea of a bubble? As I see it, Web 2.0 probably has an inflated sense of itself. The […]

Spiral Frog is a bunch of bullfrog

General
Spiral Frog is the service through which Universal will offer their entire music collection for free download. (Here’s the link to the Press Release). With a catch. It’s not only advertising based, it’s advertising forced. Spiral Frog will offer a desktop downloader for Windows Media Files (no iPods!) that can be listened to […]

Gucci breaks away from Flash

Web Design
In what I consider to be a spectacular move, Gucci has broken away from their Flash based site and built a table-free site using scriptaculous. The design company behind the move was wollzelle. Here’s a link to their entry on the site. CSS galleries have shown us that designs that were formerly only found […]

Crazy egg, crazy good support

Asides
Just a quick note to let everyone know that the support at Crazy Egg is amazing. What few problems I’ve had with their supercool service have been responded to by the developer immediately and with enthusiasm. And I haven’t even paid for the service yet, I’m still on the free plan! […]

Beyond viral marketing.
posted in
marketing
In the dawn of Web 2.0, viral marketing is presenting a new medium for brand exposure and a new definition of marketing. I was trying to decide whether to pontificate on the Long Tail, or to write about Contagious Marketing. And then it dawned on me that the two go hand in […]
