C6 Top Mac Apps 2007: Presentation
posted in
Geekery
Whether you’re a designer or a software engineer or in some area between the hemispheres of the brain, there are multitudes of reasons why you would want to make a clear and professional presentation, be it a screencast, a software manual, or a quick mockup for a client. These are a few of my favorite tools for making presentations that impress without breaking too much of a sweat. I’m saving online tools until a later part of this series, so the cool online slideshow and PowerPoint replacements are going to wait a bit…

Tales from Minnesota
posted in
Geekery, General
Well, it’s been a strange day. Yesterday the snow around here had all but melted away. This morning I woke up to over a foot of snow and it’s still coming down tonight. We’re under a blizzard warning right now. I monkeyed with a dead snowblower long enough to get it running at half-choke for 2/3rds of a 3 car driveway, and then headed downtown with Aditi to help clear the sidewalk in front of The Urbane Animal. I posted a bunch of photos to my Flickr account, just to prove we actually got snow in Southern Minnesota. So having finished all that, I decided it was a snow day and settled down for some serious geekery…

Still In Beta (Literally)
posted in
Circle Six Happenings
As part of a project for one of our clients we are digitizing and preparing for the web 30+ hours of documentary footage, a good portion of which is on BetaCam SP tapes. I, being a Final Cut kind of guy, and us, being a fresh new agency, were unprepared for such a demand. A little work on ebay and some electronic fiddling and we now have a rig for digitizing BetaCam tapes to Flash video. The deck is surprisingly tough. It came in shambles, I pieced it back together and proceeded to drop it, on my hand, while putting it on the rack. It didn’t even blink. I can understand why BetaCam was a strong player in the broadcast world, the quality is pretty darn good for a magnetic tape format. And the decks agility with shuttle and jog is surprising.

Marshall McLuhan’s Ghost

Web Design
Get a New Browser posted a link to some very cool work today. Check out the page for KSU’s Digital Ethnography class and watch some of the videos. The one titled The Machine is Us/ing Us is an inspiring look at the meaning of Web 2.0. A meaning we may have forgotten in the rush to monetize new technologies. A lot of cynicism has built up around the new face of the web and I found these videos, and some of the responses, to be a refreshing discourse on the new state of human communication. It makes me want to stop marketing and start improving the world, which makes me stop and wonder why I’m not improving the world through my marketing. Food for thought, and possibly a restless night.

Circle Six on Multimedia Apps
posted in
Geekery
As the final post in our software roundup, I’m going to cover a few of our favorite shareware and freeware multimedia applications. I’m going to go very light on audio, since Randy handles most of our audio needs on a PC platform. He keeps talking about switching, but for the time being I don’t […]

Random Thoughts, Circle Six Happenings
I made my trek to Minneapolis with one of our largest clients yesterday to Art Direct a photo shoot with photographer Jim Arndt. We shot 50 model shots and 6 laydown stacks in 12 hours. That’s a little insane, but we pulled it off. I handle the catalog layout and art […]

Slobber Away!

Circle Six Happenings, Website Updates
Due to problems embedding the Flash file, this movie is only available on the portfolio page. We shipped off the first of the Slobberfest commercials today. I’m not completely satisfied with any part of how this is coming out, but it’s not as bad as it could be. First the artist we had lined […]
