Selling Standards
posted in
Web Design
I think that web designers (myself included) spend too much time trying to sell our obsession with standards to our clients. The fact of the matter is that clients don’t care whether or not a page validates. As web designers and developers trying to sell standards, we need to concentrate on things that our clients actually care about. Things like the speed of their site and, of course, the cost. Valid pages almost always mean lighter weight code, and if standards can speed development time and reduce maintenance time, it means savings for the client in the long run. Paraphrasing Ethan Marcotte, the Web Standards project notes…

Regarding my pants and other news
posted in
Design, Web Design, Random Thoughts
First off, I sincerely apologize for the last two movies. My lack of decorum is disturbing. Not disturbing enough to make me delete them from the blog, though, as it’s probably about time I showed my true colors. That’s right, I’m a Minnes-oh-tan with a very lame sense of humor. ;-).
Meanwhile…

Better CSS Debugging with OSX
posted in
Web Design
CSS has never been the easiest part of web design. Browser inconsistencies, holes in the specs and some things that we just haven’t figured out how to do can leave a designer a little frustrated (and thinking about slicing up an image in Fireworks and building on of those table things). But […]

New Year, New Design
posted in
Web Design, Website Updates
I’m unveiling this new look a week early. I started it out with the intention of finishing it in time for the New Year, but Christmas Eve has turned out to be a pretty dull day and I’ve had plenty of time to figure out all of the Internet Explorer quirks. I […]

Review: Expanse CMS 1.3
posted in
Web Design
I reviewed Expanse a while back and had a few critical things to say, but a lot of hope for the future. Nate Cavanaugh, a developer of Expanse read the review and took to heart a few of my concerns. Seriously. Version 1.3 made some of the changes that I and […]

I Heart Not Microsoft
posted in
Web Design
Jeffrey Zeldman writes in IE7 CSS tweak show and tell: Once IE7 gains critical mass, a lot of our current thinking about ems and pixels and such will go out the window. I’ll write about that soon, probably on A List Apart. Funny how Microsoft has the power to change all the good that was coming […]

Firefox and Web Design: Top 5 Extensions
posted in
Web Design
This is more or less a “Top Firefox Addons” post, but pretty much our entire selection of Firefox extensions are geared towards web design/development, so that’s what I’m calling it. I couldn’t really do what I do without Firefox, or at least it would be considerably more difficult. While I have much […]

OSX Webdev, doing it better than Dreamweaver
posted in
Geekery
So I wanted to get rid of Dreamweaver. And I did. But you want to know why, and how… and I’m going to tell you who, even though you didn’t ask. Who? This article is written for people using OSX as a development platform. It’s also primarily directed at small to medium sized web […]

Goodbye to Dreamweaver, Goodbye to WYSIWYG
posted in
Geekery
I’ve started to use a combination of WordPress quick tags, my Ultimate Tag Warrior autotag mod and TextMate with some custom modifications to do my Wordpress blogging. It took some hacking, but I’m 100% sold on the TextMate way of blogging now. I’ve even got it hacked so that when you drag […]

Home(page) improvement

Website Updates
I fixed up the homepage a little bit. It matches the aesthetic for the blog now. I’d like to eventually incorporate the two under the same address, but I’ve got so much traffic coming in from Google I’m afraid to make any major changes to the subdomain structure. I should have […]
