  • 12.16.07 Things Alpha posted in General

I got the invitation to the alpha of Things from Cultured Code today. While some aspects of task organization are confusing at first, I’m immediately appreciating the flexibility of the system. I’m also appreciating the fact that it seems to be built around the way I actually organize my tasks, allowing for a Next Action view that can be manually converted into a “Today” view. Built in support for “Someday” and “Postponed” make for instant compatibility with the systems I had previously created manually in other programs. The usefulness of the tagging system in my own workflow will be determined as I play with it further. I’m reluctant to make a complete switch, first because it’s alpha, second because at this point there’s no synch or import feature that I’m aware of. Too much trouble and not a wide enough safety net. I am, however, really psyched to watch this one develop.

  • 11.22.07 C6 Top Mac Apps 2007: Productivity posted in Geekery

Well, the year is quickly coming to an end and I thought I’d chronicle our latest Mac app adventures. So what makes this particular list of OS X app picks special? First, I’m not doing reruns, so you’re not going to hear about TextMate and Quicksilver all over again. This list assumes you’ve picked up on the basics from at least one of the gazillion top ten lists on Digg, and made your own decisions. Second, this list isn’t a popularity contest. Some of the apps I’m including aren’t popular (yet), some aren’t even widely known. I dig through a lot of apps to find what’s going to work the best for me (and hopefully look good doing it), meaning I offer this list as nothing more than a documentation of my findings. As always, I’d love to hear what you’re using…

  • 11.18.07 Forging a New System posted in Geekery

It’s been a weird week. I found together just when I needed it. And I had reached a point of frustration with Leopard problems in iGTD and had gone looking for other solutions only to find none. 1 hour after I gave up the public alpha of OmniFocus was released. I pre-registered for a license (good deal). Then Bartek announces iGTD2 with some screenshots/casts today and things are looking pretty competitive again. I just want one system I can trust and love! I’ve found my divorce rate with mac apps is about 90% and my typical relationship length is about a year. Development cycles and my interest level and needs tend to get out of phase at some point. Once I’ve settled into a new routine, I’ll be revisiting some of my productivity posts to talk about more current affairs. In the meantime, I’ll be trying to get to know OmniFocus better…

  • 8.20.07 EagleFiler: Productivity and File Management posted in Geekery

Eagle Filer IconC-Command, the makers of the excellent Spam filtering software, SpamSieve, have released an app called Eagle Filer. This app seems to have existed under the radar for a little while now, but I thought it was time to give it a try. I’m now a die-hard user. Here’s why…

  • 7.29.07 Group Productivity On The Web posted in General

  • 5.14.07 VirtualBox: Open Source Virtualization posted in Geekery

Virtual Box ScreenshotVirtualBox is an Open Source x86 virtualization product available for OS X. Functioning along the lines of Parallels, but free, I’ve recently gotten XP up and running on my Intel based MacBook Pro and have Internet Explorer versions 5-7 open for testing my websites without having to boot up my old PC. In fact, now I can sell my PC ;). VirtualBox is simple, powerful and easy on the eyes. I had XP up and running in 30 minutes, and 27 of that was the actual XP install. I especially recommend this product if you’re a web developer who needs to test websites cross-platform. I’m currently working on figuring out how to approach a localhost test server in a way that will let me access it from both platforms while I’m working. Once I get that down, I’ll let you know how I did it ;).

  • 4.14.07 Circle Six Favorites: Spring 2007 posted in Geekery

I need a break from the Subversion series, so I’m taking a moment to list some of the most exciting OS X software and a few of my current favorite websites/apps. I don’t know how long or short the list will end up, so I refuse to either limit myself to 10 or set such high expectations ;).

  • 3.7.07 GTD Flip-Flop and other news posted in Geekery

I’m back to & ToDo / Task Management Application for Mac & Windows">Easy Task Manager. Actiontastic is cool, but too lightweight for my current needs. Most of what I want it to do is either promised for the future or not in development at all, which eventually made me question why I was trying to make it work. I’ll settle for poor aesthetics and pretty good functionality (and a very nice pricetag) on Easy Task.

  • 3.3.07 Circle Six GTD Redux posted in Geekery

After 1 week of implementing my new productivity system I’m pleased to report that I’m more productive than I’ve ever been in my life. I’ve made a few minor tweaks that I’ll detail, but the system itself, based mostly on tips and tricks I collected around the net, has served me extremely well. When I first implemented it my inbox got so huge that I felt overwhelmed, but I spent the necessary time processing and then took on my tasks one ata a time and got through an amazing amount of work (and even some play) this week. So here is another look at the system…

  • 3.1.07 GEMTD (getting even more things done) posted in Geekery

I may have to give up this new system based solely on the fact that I’m getting so much done that I can’t stop working. I was under the impression that if I was really productive, I’d have more free time. I keep thinking that I’ll get to that point when my to-do list shrinks, but every time it does, I’ve got an inbox and an action/response folder to take care of. But man, am I getting things done. Any doubts I had about the effectiveness of this system have been vaporized. I’ve been getting so much done in the last three days that I can hardly believe how unproductive I was before. Maybe that’s it, maybe I just had a long way to go…
