  • 10.22.07 An iTunes Monitor for MoodBlast posted in Geekery

A better solution: Proxi from Griffin has a built in iTunes monitor with lots of other fun stuff. You can just trigger a basic applescript on track change that sends “^s Rocking out to !itune”, replacing ^s with whatever services it should blast to. If you run “if player state is playing” […]

  • 9.18.07 MoodBlast Recapitulation posted in Geekery

MoodBlast has gone classical with the release of 2.24. It now handles classical music, parsing for movement, composer and performer and creating an appropriate string. Classical fans, enjoy. In other news, Jott2iGTD is pretty much fixed, just waiting for a couple of stray bug reports to come back as confirmed fixes. Fun stuff.

  • 8.7.07 Patti posted in Random Thoughts

Patti SmithOn a personal note, I went to see Patti Smith last night. She’s one of my few heroes and my new reason for not being afraid to face getting older. 61 years old and as unruly a rocker as ever. Well, a little tamed down, but no more so than the 51 year old Iggy Pop I saw a few years back. But it made me realize that I can continue doing what I’m doing and just get better at it, that I can be twice as old as I am now and be twice as good. That’s something to look forward to, rather than the idea of just burning out and becoming a shell of your youth. I’m a bit of a cynic…

  • 6.22.07 Pandora Better posted in Geekery

PandoraJam ScreenshotI have a new favorite Pandora interface: PandoraJam. It’s a native Cocoa app (Mac only) that gives you keyboard shortcuts for Pandora, last.fm scrobbling and recording to iTunes with album cover tagging. It’s shareware ($15). I’m having a blast with it. I’m uncertain of the legality of it, but I’m enjoying taking my Pandora stations on the road with my iPod…

  • 4.14.07 Circle Six Favorites: Spring 2007 posted in Geekery

I need a break from the Subversion series, so I’m taking a moment to list some of the most exciting OS X software and a few of my current favorite websites/apps. I don’t know how long or short the list will end up, so I refuse to either limit myself to 10 or set such high expectations ;).

  • 1.12.07 The Death of the Middle Man posted in marketing

It’s terribly exciting to me that music predictions could be coming true, as potentially indicated by this report from the BBC, quoted from The Long Tail: Essex rock band Koopa could become the first unsigned group to land a UK top 40 hit thanks to new chart rules. Their download-only single Blag, Steal & Borrow is on […]

  • 9.6.06 EMI joins Universal in Spiral Frog hijinks posted in General

EMI is adding their catalog to Spiral Frog’s offerings, where music will be available for free download at a bizarre price. I elaborated on my feelings about this in Spiral Frog is a bunch of bull frog. So I won’t go into rambling on it again. Over at the AJAX Blog I grabbed this quote: The […]

  • 9.2.06 The music war is on. DRM shields up. posted in marketing

Samsung has joined the fray, along with Microsoft, Myspace and Spiral Frog/Universal to compete with iTunes. More options, more music, right? DRM issues aside, here’s my biggest problem. With the exception of Myspace, they all seem to be planning proprietary formats that can only be used on certain brands of players. […]

  • 9.1.06 Myspace and DRM-Free Music posted in marketing

This article at Mashable just popped up around 10pm CST. Myspace is apparently planning to sell the music of 3 million unsigned bands without DRM protection, in MP3 format. This could be more of a competitor for iTunes than the whole Spiral Frog deal. Just legitimizing DRM-free MP3’s once again seems […]

  • 8.29.06 Spiral Frog is a bunch of bullfrog posted in General

Spiral Frog is the service through which Universal will offer their entire music collection for free download. (Here’s the link to the Press Release). With a catch. It’s not only advertising based, it’s advertising forced. Spiral Frog will offer a desktop downloader for Windows Media Files (no iPods!) that can be listened to […]
