C6 Top Mac Apps 2007: Hardware Break
posted in
Geekery
Well, we’ve gone through about half the software we want to mention. I’m going to take a little break and talk about my favorite (Mac compatible) hardware purchases this year. I didn’t get an iPhone. I live in what can only be referred to as a cellularly-challenged part of Minnesota. I can drive half an hour and buy an iPhone, but if I take it home with me it magically becomes an iPod Touch. Cool trick, but expensive. So, once my 5th Gen iPod gets good and scratched up I’ll just get a Touch… but for now, there are better ways to blow what money I have:

Archive Previews in Together
posted in
Geekery
I just had to take a moment to mention that the zip Quick Look plugin works inside of Together. The plugin (the .mac download is crashed and I couldn’t find a mirror, sorry) lets you peek inside zip files using Quick Look. Inside of Together, that gives you an instant preview of the contents of archived files within your library or project. Absolutely awesome.

A Square Meal for your Mac
posted in
Geekery
In the midst of working on the next installment of our “Top Mac Apps” series, I just spent my allowance and my lunch money at “Give Good Food To Your Mac”, a mac software promo that I think I got an early invitation to yesterday. It appears to be open to the public now. The beauty of this one is that you get to choose which apps go in your bundle with full knowledge of what you’re getting (and a chance to try before you buy), and get volume discounts up to 70% off. And the selection is excellent, in my opinion. With a base including apps like CSSEdit and Boinx iStopMotion Home, the list is topped off by a few newcomers and some video apps that I’m excited to put to work. Take a gander, spend some hard earned cash. You’re worth it.

C6 Top Mac Apps 2007: Utilities
posted in
Geekery
What’s a mac without a good set of utilities? These programs are, just like the rest of this series, the ones that are proven in my workflow to work. Not always beauty contest winners, and not always well known, but tried and tested by me. Not that I’m offering money back guarantees or anything :). The topics range from disk repair and archiving to memory management and there should be something here for any intermediate to advanced mac user.

C6 Top Mac Apps 2007: Geeking Out
posted in
Geekery
There are some things that normal people (the ones who spend less than 50% of their lives in front of a computer) just don’t need to know about. These probably fall into that list. For the rest of you, here are some of my favorite highlights from the “Geekery” world:

C6 Top Mac Apps 2007: Productivity
posted in
Geekery
Well, the year is quickly coming to an end and I thought I’d chronicle our latest Mac app adventures. So what makes this particular list of OS X app picks special? First, I’m not doing reruns, so you’re not going to hear about TextMate and Quicksilver all over again. This list assumes you’ve picked up on the basics from at least one of the gazillion top ten lists on Digg, and made your own decisions. Second, this list isn’t a popularity contest. Some of the apps I’m including aren’t popular (yet), some aren’t even widely known. I dig through a lot of apps to find what’s going to work the best for me (and hopefully look good doing it), meaning I offer this list as nothing more than a documentation of my findings. As always, I’d love to hear what you’re using…

MY Favorite Leopard Feature
posted in
Geekery
I would just like to take a moment to point out a new feature in Leopard that hasn’t gotten as much hype as a keyboard nerd like me would like. Backstory: I own 2 diNovo Edge bluetooth keyboards (and a Revolution MX mouse to go with each). I’d been relying on a location switcher that would detect the presence of the keyboard and then run an Applescript to switch the modifier keys (flip Option and Command) for the PC keyboard layout. The Applescripts relied on Universal Access behaviors to manually pull down the menus. Not elegant, but way better than doing it by hand. So anyway…

Pandora Better
posted in
Geekery
I have a new favorite Pandora interface: PandoraJam. It’s a native Cocoa app (Mac only) that gives you keyboard shortcuts for Pandora, last.fm scrobbling and recording to iTunes with album cover tagging. It’s shareware ($15). I’m having a blast with it. I’m uncertain of the legality of it, but I’m enjoying taking my Pandora stations on the road with my iPod…Read the rest of Pandora Better...
