Jott2iGTDBugfixes
posted in
Geekery
We’re slowly and quietly working out the bugs in Jott2iGTD2. Thanks to some very helpful people who didn’t give up, I’ve found a couple of key problems that I wouldn’t otherwise have known about because they didn’t exist on my installs. Thanks to those who have submitted reports so far and keep ‘em coming! Version 2.2 is available, so if you’ve had bad luck at all, try the new one out. If it still doesn’t work for you, let me know. I’m really helpful ;).

Expanding Jott2iGTD2 (You can help!)
posted in
Geekery
Jott support will be expanding and improving on Jott2iGTD2, but in the meantime I’m running into quite a few people (including the author of iGTD) who can’t use Jott because it’s US and Canada only. I’m looking to find similar services available in other countries that I can expand Jott2iGTD to support. If you have a service that you use, let me know and send me a sample email that it sends you. It doesn’t have to be a voice transcription service, it can be anything you use to send yourself emails when you’re on the road…

Screencasting and other News

Geekery, General
I’m finishing up a screencast for Jott2iGTD2 and planning to do one for my Mail.app and iGTD setup next. I’m on a roll. I got Jott2iGTD2 finished up today, complete with a new icon and installer package. It should be online shortly, I just have to finish rendering the screencast and typing up the documentation. I’m having fun with my Blue Snowball Microphone. This thing is killer.

Jott2iGTD After Dark
posted in
Geekery
Okay. It’s 12:30AM and I never stay up this late. Mostly because I usually get up about 3 or 4 hours from now. But I’m pretty deep into the new version of Jott2iGTD right now. In order to take advantage of the new notification features of iGTD, I had to use rubycocoa, and distributing that in any decent way meant a bundled app. Then the challenge was creating a universal binary (I ended up building for PPC only and it works fine). Then I had to embed a ruby interpreter to normalize the playing field. Then I had to fake out an icon (it’ll get better), and now I’m back to debugging. This is all new to me, I’ve been scripting since my Pascal days but haven’t had to compile anything for as long as I can remember. Or write a line of C. I had to write 5 or 6 to make this one work ;). So anyway, I’ve only been able to test this on two machines, one Intel, one PPC, so if anyone would like to get an advance copy and let me know if it works, all you need is the ability to run Console and email its output. Contact me if you’re interested.

It’s my party…
posted in

Well, it was my Birthday today. I got a lot of good wishes, in person and via the internet, which kept me going through an otherwise perfectly awful day. But all that aside, Bartek got me an advance copy of the next iGTD and the new notification system rocks. You can add tasks and archive items through any interface that can send cocoa notifications, including rubycocoa, so porting the current version of Jott2iGTD was simple. I should be ready to release the next version about the same time he’s ready to release the new iGTD. Improved guessing algorithms, way better parsing system, date handling, all that jazz. Coming soon…

Jott2iGTD Context Keyword Fix
posted in
Geekery
I got reports and confirmed that Jott regularly mistakes “context” for “contact”. I didn’t want to have the script automatically replace contact because it may be an important word to use in a task description. The keyword has been changed to “do at” followed by the context name. The only caveat is that Jott will interpret this to “due at” on a regular basis, which the script compensates for, but you’ll need to make sure you say “due by” if you’re putting a due date into the task description or notes. The script does not currently handle due dates or start dates due to the complexity of translating dates and the need for an external library like chronify to make it work well. There’s another minor release on the download page.

Minor Jott2iGTD bugfix
posted in
Geekery
Jott2iGTD had been looking for Ruby in /usr/local/bin but the standard install should be in /usr/bin. I changed the shebang (the first line of the ruby script) to the proper location, so it should work for more users now. If you’ve been having trouble running the script (nothing happened), download the newest version and you should be okay. There are further instructions on the download page for customizing the shebang as necessary.
