A new design brewing…
posted in
Website Updates
No, this probably won’t be the actual new design. But it might be the direction I’m heading. I’m feeling like doing a “designer’s” design, with a strong grid, proper line heights, nice typography and a clean layout. No 3D shadows or reflections, just nice Gestalt theory. And maybe I’ll actually get it done once I catch up with all of my client jobs that are waiting in the wings. I’m definitely not complaining about having jobs waiting in the wings, though.

The Salem Trials (Testing Witch)
posted in
Geekery
Usually when I try out a new utility it takes me a while to find out if I’ll get used to having it around or not. Eventually, it either becomes an indispensable part of my everyday computing habits, or is relegated to a dusty corner where it will be AppZapped during the next housecleaning round. Witch, by Peter Maurer, turned out to be a different story for me, though.

Updates coming…
posted in
Geekery
There are a few major updates on the way. First, with the release of Wordpress 2.1, quite a few of the template tags have changed, rendering my Wordpress theme bundle somewhat obsolete. I’m studying right now to try to provide a good update and some additional functionality. It will probably be released as a new bundle, leaving the 2.0 version for posterity.
Second, I’ve found out a great way to add fuzzy comparison of tags to post content in TextMate, using the Porter Stemming Algorithm. I’m waiting for an answer on a question regarding bundle dependencies, but the revised Autotag bundle should be ready for release soon. In combination with the UTW-RPC plugin, it’s working as an awesome way to tag posts quickly and easily, using tags that already exist on your blog. Which, of course, is kind of the purpose of tags.

Circle Six on Widgets
posted in
Geekery
This is a short list of our favorite OS X widgets. I try to keep the number of widgets running at any given time to a minimum, so this is, as I said, a short list. CharacterPal from Taco Widgets is extremely handy. CharacterPal is a widget that helps you remember how to type any special character. […]

Mind Control

Geekery
It’s my nature to be unusually excited by things like this, but I think there are far reaching possibilities for this development. The Neural Systems Lab at the University of Washington is working towards a brain-computer interface that will enable “sophisticated control and interaction with the environment, using very simple selection-based interfaces that […]

Another look at ModX
posted in
Web Design
I’m working on a CSS-debugging article, but in the meantime I thought I’d share a more sober look at the ModX CMS. I took a chance and used it to put together a static site AND a blog site for a client who needed both. I wanted a consistent login and editing […]

ModX Review
posted in
Web Design
I always promise a post (I said I’d write a short TextMate tutorial), and then find something terribly exciting to write about before I get the intended post finished. And this one is exciting. If you’re using Joomla/Mambo and looking for an XHTML/CSS solution, read on. I had initially passed over the ModX CMS […]
