• 11.21.07 iGTD Back From The Brink posted in Geekery

  Bartek has released the third iGTD Leopard fix, correcting every last issue that had originally forced me to forsake it. So here I am in the middle of getting used to OmniFocus, having already paid for a license, and the comfort of my old ways is calling me back. I’m a little torn, and I’m thinking I’m going to stay put right where I am and ride this little wave of GTD excitement out. Things announced the completion of their Alpha today and promised their mailing list recipients Beta copies by Christmas. OmniFocus has released updates daily (sometimes twice) and have added multiple new features since the release of the public beta. And iGTD2 is looking pretty sweet. So I’m not doing any more importing/exporting/iCal hackery of my extensive todo list until I’ve had a chance to try all of the above and decide on the “one”. I guess this tingly feeling is some kind of “organization excitement”. And here I thought I was just getting annoyed.

• 11.18.07 Forging a New System posted in Geekery

  It’s been a weird week. I found together just when I needed it. And I had reached a point of frustration with Leopard problems in iGTD and had gone looking for other solutions only to find none. 1 hour after I gave up the public alpha of OmniFocus was released. I pre-registered for a license (good deal). Then Bartek announces iGTD2 with some screenshots/casts today and things are looking pretty competitive again. I just want one system I can trust and love! I’ve found my divorce rate with mac apps is about 90% and my typical relationship length is about a year. Development cycles and my interest level and needs tend to get out of phase at some point. Once I’ve settled into a new routine, I’ll be revisiting some of my productivity posts to talk about more current affairs. In the meantime, I’ll be trying to get to know OmniFocus better…

  Jott2iGTD 2.4 is ready for download, which should be especially good news for anyone who’s using an older version and didn’t make it into the beta testing round. • 7.22.07 Expanding Jott2iGTD2 (You can help!) posted in Geekery

  Jott support will be expanding and improving on Jott2iGTD2, but in the meantime I’m running into quite a few people (including the author of iGTD) who can’t use Jott because it’s US and Canada only. I’m looking to find similar services available in other countries that I can expand Jott2iGTD to support. If you have a service that you use, let me know and send me a sample email that it sends you. It doesn’t have to be a voice transcription service, it can be anything you use to send yourself emails when you’re on the road…

  I’ve done a quick screencast demonstrating my current, simplified system for creating tasks using Mail.app. I use Mail.app, iGTD and MailTags in the screencast to create tasks and archive important emails with links back to the original emails. I’m new at the screencasting thing, so forgive my amateur approach…

• 7.21.07 Screencasting and other News posted in Geekery, General

  I’m finishing up a screencast for Jott2iGTD2 and planning to do one for my Mail.app and iGTD setup next. I’m on a roll. I got Jott2iGTD2 finished up today, complete with a new icon and installer package. It should be online shortly, I just have to finish rendering the screencast and typing up the documentation. I’m having fun with my Blue Snowball Microphone. This thing is killer.

• 7.21.07 Jott2iGTD After Dark posted in Geekery

  Okay. It’s 12:30AM and I never stay up this late. Mostly because I usually get up about 3 or 4 hours from now. But I’m pretty deep into the new version of Jott2iGTD right now. In order to take advantage of the new notification features of iGTD, I had to use rubycocoa, and distributing that in any decent way meant a bundled app. Then the challenge was creating a universal binary (I ended up building for PPC only and it works fine). Then I had to embed a ruby interpreter to normalize the playing field. Then I had to fake out an icon (it’ll get better), and now I’m back to debugging. This is all new to me, I’ve been scripting since my Pascal days but haven’t had to compile anything for as long as I can remember. Or write a line of C. I had to write 5 or 6 to make this one work ;). So anyway, I’ve only been able to test this on two machines, one Intel, one PPC, so if anyone would like to get an advance copy and let me know if it works, all you need is the ability to run Console and email its output.
