Did you notice? The blog is WAY faster than it was yesterday. I got my CSS compressed with Marco’s plugin, my javascript optimized, compressed and re-ordered, and my pages being served with gzip compression. Man, what a difference. My page load times cut in half. Read on for a few tricks I learned today…

  • 5.1.07 My Moleskine Method posted in Geekery

Yeti and My MoleskineI finally figured out how I wanted to use my Moleskine. It’s not an elaborate hack, it’s just a system. For those of you less inclined toward the complexity of the hPDA, here’s a way to make use of a very beautiful, very sexy notebook while keeping organized and working with whatever computer based system you’ve chosen…

  • 2.26.07 Smarter Mailboxes posted in Geekery

So I’ve run into a bug with my system already. First, I found out that you can hack the SmartMailboxes.plist file in your Library/Mail directory and change the IMAPMailboxAttributes of a smart folder from 18 to 16 and it becomes editable. So I set conditions to have it display my unread inbox (minus the spam folder) and my tickler file (MailTags due date before 1 days from today). But, if there aren’t any tickler messages displayed, it won’t show unread messages either. If there’s even one tickler message, everything is fine. I found another person asking this question on the forum, but no answers. Until someone comes up with a better solution or fixes the bug, here’s my answer. Send yourself a message with the subject “Placeholder” and set a due date of 1/1/2006 on it. Depending on how your box is sorted, it should stay at the bottom and will keep your Smart Folder working as an all-purpose GTD Inbox.

  • 2.19.07 Quicksilver, Twitter, and Wordcount posted in Geekery

TwitterrificThis is a quick hack of the Tweet script by Coda Hale. It adds a quick call to the Unix command wc (wordcount) that checks to make sure your text is under 140 characters before posting to Twitter. It requires Growl for OSX. This version also uses the Twitterrific icon for visual pleasantry, so I highly recommend installing it (it’s a great little program), otherwise removing the single reference to the program in the script. • 1.24.07 WP2.1 Feed Truncation posted in Geekery

Well, it was pointed out to me that my RSS feeds are now being cut off at the <–more–> mark. I found the reasons (more or less) here. I’ve been using the “more” instead of creating excerpts, which is a fairly common practice. But rather than hack apart my shiny new Wordpress code, I built a plugin to let me easily post multi-paragraph excerpts from within TextMate (or from anywhere you can edit WP content).

  • 1.23.07 Landing Sites, WP-Cache and Google Reader posted in Web Design, Geekery

One of my favorite functionalities of this blog was the Landing Sites plugin from The undersigned, which I lost when I started using WP-Cache. So I needed to change a few things.

    1. I needed it not to display a landing site page for Google Reader users
    2. I needed it to work with WP-Cache which was becoming more and more vital as my traffic increased
    3. I needed a modified version that would break apart the request string on a 404 page and try to guess what the user was actually looking for and offer helpful suggestions, in the case of broken or malformed links to my blog

  • 1.9.07 Better CSS Debugging with OSX posted in Web Design

CSS has never been the easiest part of web design. Browser inconsistencies, holes in the specs and some things that we just haven’t figured out how to do can leave a designer a little frustrated (and thinking about slicing up an image in Fireworks and building on of those table things). But […]

  • 1.3.07 My take on the Wordpress Rich Text Editor posted in Web Design, Geekery

I post to Wordpress from TextMate, but I make a lot of sites for clients using Wordpress and for them, this isn’t an option. The built in Wordpress Rich Text editor is actually one of the better solutions I’ve found for my clients. I’ve tried quite a few options, but my goal […]

  • 11.7.06 A new plan of attack posted in Geekery

I’m giving up on the idea of writing modular plugins for every hook I want to add to xmlrpc. They don’t play nice together and require too many hacks to the blogging client. I’m going to write one massive plugin that adds all of the hooks I want and effectively overrides the […]
