So many new features…
posted in
Geekery
I’m a little depressed that I’ve become so obsessed with MoodBlast that I haven’t posted anything but updates here. Between work and MoodBlast I’m finding there’s only 24 hours in a day and that’s just not enough. I need to slow the rotation of the planet just a little. I’m going to get started on my series of tricks I’ve learned in the making of MoodBlast after the weekend. But for now, 2.49.5 is out and here’s the changelog…

MoodBlast 2.49.3: YouTube, Tumblr and more…
posted in
Geekery
MoodBlast 2.49.3 is out. There’s relatively extensive Tumblr support, as well as some features for posting YouTube links/videos. I also came up with a solution for the Facebook “Brett Terpstra is…” prefix peculiarity. The help file has been updated to include the new features, but here’s a copy of the Changelog…

MoodBlast 2.49… Facebook, Baby!

MoodBlast 2.49 is out. I’ll be updating the download page in a second, but auto-update will work right now. Facebook is back, Accuweather support is added, and there are a ton of enhancements…Read the rest of MoodBlast 2.49… Facebook, Baby!...

Facebook API Update
posted in
Geekery
Well, they did it. Facebook is allowing status updates through their API. You have to get “Extended Permissions” from the user, which is pretty scary for the user, but if you want to update your status from an external app, it shouldn’t be that scary. And since I’ve already done most of the work to get MoodBlast working with a homebrew Facebook app, it shouldn’t take too much to get it moving in this direction. Thanks to Reid for the tip! This will delay the next release of MoodBlast a little, but I’m sure you’ll all find it worth it in the end.Read the rest of Facebook API Update...

A Facebook Compromise
posted in
Geekery
I’m working towards a Facebook compromise. It will allow MoodBlast to update your Facebook feed up to 10 times a day. Legally and using Facebook’s API (if we can call it that). It’s not as great as changing your status, but it will serve basically the same purpose. I originally wanted to just create a MoodBlast app for Facebook and have it updated by a desktop client, but that seems to be out-of-bounds, along with most useful API functions. So I’m working with what I’ve got.Read the rest of A Facebook Compromise...

MoodBlast 2.13
posted in
Geekery
MoodBlast 2.13 is out, current users can just use the built in update options. New users, head for the download page! As mentioned previously, Facebook is no longer a friend of MoodBlast. We’re sorry that it ended the way it did, and we hope they’ll call someday, but for now, we just need some space. However, and in no way is this meant to trick you into upgrading to a Facebook-less version, but UTF-8 and international weather support has greatly improved, the interface is further tweaked and we’ve added Yappd! Here’s why…

Losing Facebook
posted in
Geekery
Admit it, you hate Facebook. Okay, I hate Facebook. And I hate that they’re now taking legal action against those of us using the code that allows people to update their status remotely. The next version of MoodBlast will remove Facebook support until they actually support it in their crappy API. I’ll do my best to add a few more services, starting with a gem that you probably haven’t heard of but I’m falling in love with: Yappd. And Plazes, and expanded locations support and all the good stuff. I know I’ll lose a lot of interest when I drop Facebook, but they make it harder for us every day and now they’re threatening us. Oh well. By the way, the next version will completely fix Unicode/UTF-8 problems as well as international weather issues, so international users will be able to rock and roll, everywhere but Facebook.

I Had to Test Sparkle (MoodBlast 2.1)
posted in
Geekery
Well, it appears the auto-updates work, after a little bump that hopefully nobody noticed. The new version improves MoodBlast’s ability to return to the previous foreground window when the panel is closed, instead of forcing you to grab your mouse or ⌘-⇥ to it. I did forget to mention one feature in the previous post: MoodBlast now downcases the first letter of a string when posting to Facebook. Given the way Facebook displays your mood (Brett Terpstra is…), it looked awkward to have a capital in the middle of the sentence and was inconvenient to have to post sentences beginning with lowercase letters to every other service. So now you can just start your sentence with a capital letter and let MoodBlast handle the rest. While I’m writing, I thought I’d give you a list of up and coming features, as well as some hopes for the not-too-distant future…Read the rest of I Had to Test Sparkle (MoodBlast 2.1)...

For anyone keeping track, there’s a super-cool new version of MoodBlast on the horizon. A revamped interface and a slew of new features (many from user requests). It’s basically a whole new program, with all of the original functionality. Here’s just a taste…Read the rest of MoodBlast 2.0 on the Horizon...

MoodBlast: Standalone MoodSwing
posted in
Geekery
Well, I had to learn a little Objective-C to pull this off, and it’s not beautiful (yet), but MoodBlast is a menubar version of MoodSwing, the script for updating iChat, Adium, Skype, Twitter, Jaiku and Facebook simultaneously (or any combination thereof…). It uses the same syntax, but allows for selecting of services with checkboxes right from the submission window. It can be called up with a system-wide hotkey (Control-Shift-M), and has all of the same features as MoodSwing. If you’re not a Quicksilver fanatic, this might be for you! Actually, I’m almost liking it better because of the quick selection of services, but don’t tell Quicksilver that. I added it to the MoodSwing download page, so they have to learn to get along now.
