  • 5.28.07 Ajax Usability: Tab History posted in Web Design

Today’s tip gleaned from my experience in building the latest Circle Six Design website is more of a hint, or suggestion, than a how-to. It’s mostly about javascript, and my javascript is pretty crazy for this, mostly because I’m not very experienced with javascript and it’s kind of hacked. However, what I got working is worth sharing…

  • 5.26.07 Storing a Query posted in Web Design

I’ve finally “finished” the C6 website to my satisfaction and am ready to start blogging a little more regularly. I thought I’d kick it off with a new series on “how I did it” and reveal a few techniques I learned/developed in the process of making the new site. Today I’m going to go over the last one I figured out: Storing a Wordpress database query while you run a second one on a page…

  • 5.24.07 Finally Finished, Almost posted in Web Design, Website Updates

I finally went live with the new version of the Circle Six Design site. It’s pretty heavy on the prototype.js with a lot of custom effects, but it’s completely valid and works just fine if you turn off javascript ;). It’s pretty much custom code from the ground up, still based on Wordpress, of course. I had a lot of fun doing this one and I’d love to know what you think!

  • 5.21.07 To Whom It May Concern posted in General

I thought I’d jot a quick post tonight. I’ve sorely neglected the blog for a few days now, having become obsessed with a complete overhaul of the main Circle Six Design site. It’s going very well, a Victorian/Noir design with a touch of javascript and a few maneuvers that I pulled out of thin air to impress the ladies. I also fixed the link on 30Cal so if you haven’t tried it yet, check it out. One of my visitors sent me an enhancement for the Wordpress Theme Bundle, so look for an updated release of that very soon. I’m seriously considering doing all of the more advanced tags and still planning to get it up-to-date with the new codex. All this and more, as soon as I get the new site online. Oh, and I’m building the new site on WP 2.2, so it’s giving me a chance to test my plugins and bundles for errors, which I’ll report/update soon.

  • 5.4.07 Tangerine: Sticky Sweet Color Management posted in Design, Web Design

Tangerine color paletteTangerine is a new color management app for OS X that provides designers with a consistent palette for creating color palettes that translate between applications. It functions as a floating palette available from all applications and adding colors can be done with copy and paste, a dropper (magnifying glass) or with input sliders. The colors are then available with the click or drag of a swatch in any of your applications. It works with profiles and adjusts for different screen modes. In my short time experimenting with this program I’ve fallen in love with it. This is an excellent extension to the built in Color Picker and in tandem with a good Color Wheel makes for an excellent color management setup. If you deal with color, in print or web, check this out!

  • 4.23.07 A Few Thoughts on Coda posted in Web Design

I seem to be the only one not thinking of switching my entire web development platform to Coda. I’m not saying it couldn’t ever happen, but in my last 2 hours of experimenting I’ve been suffering from Dreamweaver flashbacks.

  • 4.23.07 CSSEdit 2.5 posted in Web Design

As a beta tester for CSSEdit 2.5, I can tell you that the new features are awesome and SO many little bugs have been fixed. First, the much talked about tabs were added. Then we got the ability to see what styles in the sheet were affecting a selector in X-Ray. Then we could click the style and jump right to it in the stylesheet. Faster image updates and less choking on Javascript in the previews. And most importantly (to me), command-return now functions as expected in all situations! Read more about it at the MacRabbit site.

  • 4.23.07 TextMate Fonts posted in Geekery

DejaVu Vera Sans MonoAdmittedly, I’ve never played much with monospaced fonts. As a graphic designer, I’ve put my time into my art and let my code rest on Monaco. No more, however, as a couple of fonts were just brought to my attention via the TextMate list that have sparked a new interest in monospace fonts for me…

  • 4.20.07 Slidez: Quick and Easy Portfolios posted in Web Design

Slidez is a new tool that has me a little excited. You can sign up for a free account and then batch upload a bunch of photos to create a slideshow. You can customize where the thumbnails go, what font is used, background color, etc. But wait, here’s the cool part: it’s got an embed function for your website/blog and an xml feed. Have fun!
