My Biggest Work Yet
posted in
Design
Well, when I’m not trying to write software, I’m usually designing. I just got pictures back from California of my biggest published piece to date. It’s a barricade for a shop installation, and I’ve forgotten the measurements because I got the job at 9:30pm and it was due by 11am the next day. But you can see in the picture the scale next to a human being. I’m finishing up a 24′x12′ billboard for another client right now, so that will rival it for large scale design…Read the rest of My Biggest Work Yet...

Group Productivity On The Web
posted in
General
I’ve been working to narrow down the array of possibilities for productivity apps at Circle Six Design. I’ve been looking for solutions that are accessible by both employees and clients, inexpensive and easy to use. Out of the array of possibilities, here’s my current list…

Project Management with Zoho
posted in
General
I’ve been trying out project management options, looking for a way to track everyone’s todo lists, meetings, time and clients in one place. I’ve eventually landed on Zoho Projects and purchased a paid account. I’m really happy with the options it provides and the interface it uses. Here’s a quick rundown…

Selling Standards
posted in
Web Design
I think that web designers (myself included) spend too much time trying to sell our obsession with standards to our clients. The fact of the matter is that clients don’t care whether or not a page validates. As web designers and developers trying to sell standards, we need to concentrate on things that our clients actually care about. Things like the speed of their site and, of course, the cost. Valid pages almost always mean lighter weight code, and if standards can speed development time and reduce maintenance time, it means savings for the client in the long run. Paraphrasing Ethan Marcotte, the Web Standards project notes…

iDropper (New and Improved!)
posted in
Geekery
After some initial bugs, the latest release of iDropper came out today. I got a patch emailed to me that took care of my SFTP problems and am now a very happy user of iDropper. I had initially purchased iDropper but had been unable to use it with my primary server due to a lack of SFTP support. Now that it’s been added (and patched up), I’m happy to promote it as a great client uploading solution.

Still In Beta (Literally)
posted in
Circle Six Happenings
As part of a project for one of our clients we are digitizing and preparing for the web 30+ hours of documentary footage, a good portion of which is on BetaCam SP tapes. I, being a Final Cut kind of guy, and us, being a fresh new agency, were unprepared for such a demand. A little work on ebay and some electronic fiddling and we now have a rig for digitizing BetaCam tapes to Flash video. The deck is surprisingly tough. It came in shambles, I pieced it back together and proceeded to drop it, on my hand, while putting it on the rack. It didn’t even blink. I can understand why BetaCam was a strong player in the broadcast world, the quality is pretty darn good for a magnetic tape format. And the decks agility with shuttle and jog is surprising.

Best Thank You Note, Ever
posted in
Circle Six Happenings
One of our clients, RedKlaw Designs, sent us a thank you note yesterday. First, a backstory. Kathy, the woman behind the jewelry that RedKlaw sells, is extremely talented with bead work. She can weave people’s life stories into pendants and charms. In addition to the fantastic jewelry that she makes (yes, I’m proud to have worked with them), she makes “story beads“, which is what she sent us on a keychain. It has “Circle” around the top, two sixes in the middle and 2 computers at the bottom. Honestly, I’m blown away, as this is the absolute coolest thank you note we’ve ever received (no offense to clients who’ve previously sent us thank you notes, they’re all greatly appreciated and cherished). This would be the first time I’ve ever sent a thank you note for a thank you note, though ;-).

A new design brewing…
posted in
Website Updates
No, this probably won’t be the actual new design. But it might be the direction I’m heading. I’m feeling like doing a “designer’s” design, with a strong grid, proper line heights, nice typography and a clean layout. No 3D shadows or reflections, just nice Gestalt theory. And maybe I’ll actually get it done once I catch up with all of my client jobs that are waiting in the wings. I’m definitely not complaining about having jobs waiting in the wings, though.

What I did on my vacation…
posted in
Web Design
So I haven’t posted for a while, and you’re wondering where I’ve been. Maybe not, but I’ll probably tell you anyway. I’ve been completely obsessed with a website I’m working on for a large client, to be unveiled in the next couple of days. I can’t wait. It’s based on ModX with a lot of custom code, a completely custom design and some (if I do say so) ingenious devices for creating a multi-user news/blog site from ModX.

Small Business Tools
posted in
Design
I’ve been working on filling a few holes in our day-to-day operations, and trying to find the most elegant solutions. I wanted to share a couple of them here in the hopes that they would help out people in similar situations. The business we run is a very small design and marketing agency, but the tools I’ve found apply to any small business that bills for services and needs to manage sales contacts. I’m looking for comments and suggestions!
