  • 4.21.07 Even Better Gallery posted in Wordpress Links

The Slidez xml feed inspired me to create my own gallery function for it. But then I figured why not do the same thing with Flickr and keep my photos somewhere they’d actually be found? Fortunately I found the Falbum plugin and just made some minor modifications to it. The Gallery is now driven by Flickr, and the Flickr feed on the homepage runs off the plugin. Everything looks the same, minus a little lightbox action (which was a conscious decision). I love being able to use the Flickr Uploader, tag my images and have my new albums be out there for more than just my blog readers. Now I just have to get our new photographer to submit some work (he’s awesome).

  • 4.8.07 (Live and) learn SVN posted in Web Design, Geekery

I upgraded the blog to version 2.1.3 using subversion. I have a pretty decent workflow hammered out, but it was painful getting here. I can’t blog about it until I’ve smoothed out all the things I did wrong to start with. You wouldn’t believe how many times I ended up deleting the checkout that became my production version because I didn’t read the part of the book about the file:// protocol. We’ll have a lot of topics to cover when I’m ready:

  • 4.5.07 Another VIRB (re)design posted in Website Updates

I got bored again. The microphone theme is going back up, but the VIRB profile is staying, no matter how bad it sucks.

  • 4.4.07 Fresh Strawberry Design posted in Website Updates

Strawberry Blog Screen ShotAdmittedly not my best design ever, so I saved the microphone theme in its entirety until this is a little more smoothed out, but here’s my latest blog design. It’s got a light-up strawberry. Seriously, touch it. It’s scary. There are a lot of little hidden CSS tricks throughout the site, evidence that I’m getting better at my trade. I’m still very unhappy with the overall readability and having trouble finding that line between fun design and practical design. I’ll get there. I can do one or the other, I’m just working out how to combine them…

  • 2.21.07 Twitter.xml posted in Geekery

I revamped the Twitter sidebar using PHP and XML so that it doesn’t hang when loading. It had been using an external javascript and when Twitter was slow, well, the front page of the blog didn’t even finish loading. So now it’s speedier and I can still pretend that everybody cares what I’m doing every 15 minutes ;-). Addendum: I swear it was working a minute ago. I think WP-Cache is messing with my code.

  • 2.17.07 The Twitter Bandwagon posted in Web Design, Geekery, Circle Six Happenings

You may notice a new addition to the sidebar of the front page of this blog. I’ve jumped on the Twitter bandwagon, however temporarily. It’s all a matter of my attention span, which is notoriously short. I rewrote the default badge to display something a little more in keeping with this blog (and heaven forbid I use the Flash version). It will show the last 3 updates I’ve made to twitter, which I’ve set up to work from my phone, IM, a widget and Twitterpost. That should make it easy enough that I’ll at least do it for a while. If nothing else, it will at least prove that I have no life beyond my work and geekery.

  • 2.9.07 A new design brewing… posted in Website Updates

New Design Draft 1No, this probably won’t be the actual new design. But it might be the direction I’m heading. I’m feeling like doing a “designer’s” design, with a strong grid, proper line heights, nice typography and a clean layout. No 3D shadows or reflections, just nice Gestalt theory. And maybe I’ll actually get it done once I catch up with all of my client jobs that are waiting in the wings. I’m definitely not complaining about having jobs waiting in the wings, though.

  • 1.24.07 Wordpress 2.1 Goodness posted in Web Design, Geekery

I made the switch to Wordpress 2.1 with a grand total of 3 minutes of downtime on my live server. For anyone who’s curious, I did a full backup of the blog and set it up on my local server with MAMP and Headdress. The database was too large to import with […]

  • 1.24.07 A Simple Homemade Server Alarm posted in Geekery

So, you’ve got your server tweaked and you’re pretty sure you’re prepared for an onslaught of traffic should you write a brilliant and useful article. But you’re still a little nervous, right? You’d at least like to know if your site went down, but you’re fully aware that these things always happen while you’re out driving or at work or doing something that requires you to not be sitting in front of your computer constantly refreshing your page like a paranoid dork. So build a simple server alarm!
