Yet Another Related Posts Plugin
posted in
Web Design, Geekery
Michael Erlewine has improved on the Wordpress Related Posts Plugin with Yet Another Related Posts Plugin. An improvement to the full-text search that allows limiting by a relevance threshold allows the most relevant posts to show up at the top of the list, so if you only display 5 results, they’re more likely to be of interest. It also allows control over retrieving both posts and pages. And for those less code-oriented, it can function without modification to your theme and has an improved options screen. Wordpress users should check it out!

Safari (my new crush)
posted in
Web Design, Geekery
Besides being enamored with all things Leopard, I’ve developed an intense and burning love for Safari. With a couple of exceptional plugins, it’s become my general web browser of choice. The powerhouse that is Firefox+addons may still be hard to leave behind for webdev, but for beauty, ease of use and overall integration (and awesome applescripting), Safari is definitely my new top choice…

HTML Indexing Gets Better
posted in
Web Design
I started discovering more and more mistakes in the original HTML indexing bundle. I ended up rewriting a lot of it and adding a lot of new functionality. It now recognizes a plethora of different formats for anchor tags, including empty anchors before headers, inside of headers, anchors with link text, etc. And there’s a new auto-indexing command that creates a hierarchical index. There’s even one that scans for headers and adds the anchor tags FOR you. It can’t get much easier than that. Let me know if it works. The docs from the bundle follow, download link at the end…

My weekend with XSLT
posted in
Web Design, Geekery
I just spent a very long weekend teaching myself XSL. I don’t mean long as in more than two days, but long in that I didn’t sleep and played with this stuff for hours straight. Days straight, actually. Too long. What I’m really trying to figure out is how to get this to apply to my current design. I can now fully see the power (and limitations) of xml and XSLT, but I don’t have a lot of applications that require such a technology. So here’s what I put together…

HTML Indexing Bundle
posted in
Web Design
The HTML Indexing commands have evolved into a full bundle for TextMate. For those of you who told me the original commands saved you some time on your last project, this should make the next one a breeze. The shot on the left shows a quick preview of the new auto-index with summaries command, which scans for all anchors and pulls the first 10 words following them to create an index using a definition list with even/odd classnames on the lines for styling. Download is at the end of the post. Here’s a rundown from the included help file… -

Quick HTML Anchors in TextMate
posted in
Web Design
I had to make a couple of long indexes today, so after a couple of tries and some input from the TextMate list, I came up with a pair of commands for creating named HTML anchors in TextMate…

WPZipper

Web Design
Just a quick note about a new site: wpzipper.com. It allows you to put together a pre-configured Wordpress install with your choice of plugins and themes and prepares it for installation. Registering for a free account lets you save configurations for repeat usage. Pretty nifty.

Autotag WP2.2 Compatible
posted in
Web Design, Geekery
For those blogging with Autotag, I finally got around to testing with Wordpress 2.2. It works! Now I’m working on an updated version of both UTW-RPC and Autotag that will work with the Simple Tagging plugin as well as Ultimate Tag Warrior. I’m setting it up to automatically determine which plugin is active and use that for the tag functions. It should be ready this week.

Moving Wordpress Redux
posted in
Web Design, Geekery
Well, nothing like a comment on your blog from the creator of Wordpress to make you feel silly… It turns out my work in making it simpler to move Wordpress from server to server was somewhat in vain, considering the ability to override the database settings through wp-config.php is built in to Wordpress 2.2…
