Hey, let’s blow this joint (this blog has moved!)
posted in
Circle Six Happenings, General
Circle Six Design, the company, has closed it’s doors. In the process, this blog (which had become my personal stomping ground) kind of fell by the wayside. I have, however, begun blogging anew over at BrettTerpstra.com. Come by and say “hi,” and be sure to update your feeds while you’re at it. This blog […]

Looking forward…

Circle Six Happenings
I’m still here. Granted, my posting rate will be slower now that I’m blogging for TUAW, but I’m hoping I never stop running out of things to write about here. The focus of the blog may shift a little as time goes on, but it will still be a mac-centric geek blog. You wouldn’t accept anything less, right? I’ve been holding off on a few topics until I find my niche in my new endeavor, at which point I’ll have a better feel for what goes where. And no, MoodBlast isn’t dead either. Far from it. Pownce is coming up soon, and I have some massive interface changes in mind. It’s going to be a fun year!

Peter Boysen: Galleria
posted in
Circle Six Happenings
Our resident photographer at Circle Six, Peter Boysen, has been kind enough to post a few photos to the blog gallery to liven things up a bit from my usual screenshots and snapshots. These photos were shot in our studio and represent a phase in Peter’s life I would like to dub the “Red Velour Thing With Seatbelts Period”. It’s his current obsession, and he’s been piling all manner of subjects on it, mostly human. So, without futher ado, I present Peter Boysen’s Galleria. There’s a wide sampling of Peter’s excellent work available at his blog. -

Four Days, One Measly Update
posted in
Circle Six Happenings, General
Somehow, four days have crept by in blog time. Which is approximately four days in Earth time, as well. Circle Six has been overflowing with projects and we’re really excited to be completely swamped. We’re recovering from a recent three-day photo shoot for St. Croix, and all of the post-processing that goes with it has our photographer, Peter, pretty busy. He posted one of the more interesting shots on his blog…

Geekery, Circle Six Happenings
So our landlord has consented to let us put a touchscreen in the wall outside of the main entrance to our newly expanded office, allowing us to have a message board for our clients and visitors who come while our limited staff is out to meetings or working out of the office. I want it to have a snazzy interface that shows, in Twitter style, where each employee is in general terms, what they’re doing and if and when they’ll be back. I want it to be easy to update and accept texts from mobile phones, so I may actually interface with Twitter. I also want it to be able to accept messages from people using an onscreen keyboard. Now I just have to find the time to make the interface…

Still In Beta (Literally)
posted in
Circle Six Happenings
As part of a project for one of our clients we are digitizing and preparing for the web 30+ hours of documentary footage, a good portion of which is on BetaCam SP tapes. I, being a Final Cut kind of guy, and us, being a fresh new agency, were unprepared for such a demand. A little work on ebay and some electronic fiddling and we now have a rig for digitizing BetaCam tapes to Flash video. The deck is surprisingly tough. It came in shambles, I pieced it back together and proceeded to drop it, on my hand, while putting it on the rack. It didn’t even blink. I can understand why BetaCam was a strong player in the broadcast world, the quality is pretty darn good for a magnetic tape format. And the decks agility with shuttle and jog is surprising.

The Twitter Bandwagon
posted in
Web Design, Geekery, Circle Six Happenings
You may notice a new addition to the sidebar of the front page of this blog. I’ve jumped on the Twitter bandwagon, however temporarily. It’s all a matter of my attention span, which is notoriously short. I rewrote the default badge to display something a little more in keeping with this blog (and heaven forbid I use the Flash version). It will show the last 3 updates I’ve made to twitter, which I’ve set up to work from my phone, IM, a widget and Twitterpost. That should make it easy enough that I’ll at least do it for a while. If nothing else, it will at least prove that I have no life beyond my work and geekery.

Best Thank You Note, Ever
posted in
Circle Six Happenings
One of our clients, RedKlaw Designs, sent us a thank you note yesterday. First, a backstory. Kathy, the woman behind the jewelry that RedKlaw sells, is extremely talented with bead work. She can weave people’s life stories into pendants and charms. In addition to the fantastic jewelry that she makes (yes, I’m proud to have worked with them), she makes “story beads“, which is what she sent us on a keychain. It has “Circle” around the top, two sixes in the middle and 2 computers at the bottom. Honestly, I’m blown away, as this is the absolute coolest thank you note we’ve ever received (no offense to clients who’ve previously sent us thank you notes, they’re all greatly appreciated and cherished). This would be the first time I’ve ever sent a thank you note for a thank you note, though ;-).

Circle Six Happenings, Website Updates
Well, I’m now a server admin. Like I didn’t have enough to worry about. But Circle Six Design had hit a point where it no longer made sense to use a shared host but we’re not big enough to have a full time IT person yet. So it’s up to me […]

Now that it’s been sent to all of our clients, I thought I’d share the joy with all of our friends. Here’s our Holiday Greeting Card, straight from the heart of Circle Six Design. A soundtrack by Randy and graphics by Brett, all coded in delicious XHTML and CSS with unobtrusive Javascript […]
