This brings back so many awesome memories! Shame on me, I haven’t heard “Horses” in years. In the early 70’s while still in high school I discovered New Wave or punk rock and the music for me over the following 5 to 10 years were life-changing! I stumbled upon your post while searching for a new Wordpress theme or design and yours was listed as one of 45 excellent blog designs. (nice btw) And Patti Smith’s face caught my eye so I quickly clicked over to see. Oh how I would love to go back in time when my friends and I used to hang out playing albums all day long smoking cigs and god knows what else, listening to Patti Smith, The Ramones, David Bowie (of course), the Sex Pistols and The Clash, just to name a few. Or when we hung out in the underground bars in New Orleans to see local punk rock bands such as “The Normals”. And then there was the time we saw the B-52’s at “Ole Man Rivers” in Avondale (outskirts of N.O.) before anyone even knew who they were. There were only 50 people in the joint and we were dancing right up front and center of the stage to “Planet Clair”. Well, thank you so much for the trip down memory lane! Gotta run, I have some updating to do on my playlist:)

On a personal note, I went to see Patti Smith last night. She’s one of my few heroes and my new reason for not being afraid to face getting older. 61 years old and as unruly a rocker as ever. Well, a little tamed down, but no more so than the 51 year old Iggy Pop I saw a few years back. But it made me realize that I can continue doing what I’m doing and just get better at it, that I can be twice as old as I am now and be twice as good. That’s something to look forward to, rather than the idea of just burning out and becoming a shell of your youth. I’m a bit of a cynic…
Besides a slightly lackluster (IMO) cover selection that permeated the playlist, she was really alive when she played her own material, especially the songs off of “Horses”. I was hoping to hear some “Peace and Noise”, but it didn’t happen. What did happen was the one song I thought for sure she wouldn’t play. And I got more excited than I’ve been at a show in a long time. I think I screamed when she said: “I don’t f—- much with the past, but I f—- plenty with the future…”. If you know the song, and you get it, you’ll know why it was an amazing note to end a show on.
