Longing for Japan

Note: This post is over a year old. You may want to check later in this blog to see if there is new information.

I haven’t been to Japan since, I don’t know, EVER. But I was recently (like 2 minutes ago), stunned to find out that they pay 12 times less for their broadband connections on average. So, you say, you get what you pay for, right? Then I wonder why their average speed is 12 times faster? [Reference: Bandwidth Report] [Hat Tip: Jeff Jarvis]

Well it’s quite simple. In urban areas alone, Japan’s population per square mile is five times higher than the United States. And we have an abundance of rural areas very slowly rolling out broadband. Higher capita per square mile makes it far more economically feasible for their data infrastructure.

I suppose that is simple. If the US can’t close the divide however, I foresee a serious technological gap happening as the world becomes more and more dependent on said data infrastructure.

Based on broadband penetration, South Korea is by far the world’s top broadband user with nearly 90% of households online.

South Korea and Japan are also both high on the list of countries North Korea doesn’t like and/or tests tinker toy ballistic missiles over. So thus we can conclude that the more North Korea hates yours freedoms the higher percentage of broadband penetration your country will have. I believe this issue comes up a lot in those 6 country talks they enjoy having so much.

Minority opinion: The more you need to defend against Mothra the more you need broadband penetration.

Have your say
