I’ve got a new script, but it has a very limited usage. I built it because I develop a lot of sites on my laptop using a local testing environment. In order to test my sites in VirtualBox with Internet Explorer, I have to use my local IP as the url for my Wordpress sites. Which means I end up changing the url and home address of the sites pretty often, sometimes directly through mySQL after I’ve already switched location. So here’s my solution…
It’s a very simple script that runs a quick check on an entered url and then switches lines 1 and 40 in the database that is configured for the site that the script resides in. All you have to do is download and unzip the file at the end of this post. You should end up with a directory called “move”. Put it in the root directory of the site (the same directory as wp-content, but not IN wp-content). Then just navigate to yourcurrentdomain/move and enter a new url. The http:// part is optional, it will add it if you don’t.
The script also serves a purpose in moving sites to new servers. If you can access the domain and have the wp-config.php file set up, then you can use the script, whether Wordpress is functioning or not. Consider it a rescue script.
Beyond that, and beyond people like me that just need a convenient way to switch domains frequently, this may not serve much use. But I thought I’d share it, just in case ;).
BTW, I feel like I shouldn’t need to say this but I will: don’t upload this script to your server and leave it there. It’s designed to be used during a testing phase of a website and absolutely should not be included in the final production version.
