Quicksilver, Twitter, and Wordcount

TwitterrificThis is a quick hack of the Tweet script by Coda Hale. It adds a quick call to the Unix command wc (wordcount) that checks to make sure your text is under 140 characters before posting to Twitter. It requires Growl for OSX. This version also uses the Twitterrific icon for visual pleasantry, so I highly recommend installing it (it’s a great little program), otherwise removing the single reference to the program in the script. After experimenting with multiple ways of updating Twitter, including posting from the web, Twitterpost, Twitterrific, IM, cell phone, TextMate and more, I’ve narrowed myself down to posting from Quicksilver and my cell phone when I’m away from my computer. What more do you really need? Now I just need some Twitter friends.

    now, what would really be nice is for the script to play that nice “tweet” sound that twitterer plays upon a successful upload…hint, hint.

    Unfortunately, AFAIK, there’s no easy way to play a sound from Applescript without loading Quicktime or a helper app. That’s too much overhead for something like this…

    It’s called TwiTunes and sends your currently playing iTunes track to your Twitter status. You can review the string sent and change it before sending. AND I took the time to create a pleasant icon for that, which took even longer than changing the script…

    If anyone is having trouble with the AppleScript timing out when it checks the keychain, there’s a command line way of doing things - I’ve just got this running (and on Panther as well.)

    @Matthew, thanks, that was a major problem for me. I had ended up hardcoding both username and password to get around it but would love to still have the password in keychain!

    I’ve narrowed myself down to posting from Quicksilver and my cell phone when I’m away from my computer.

    I wish I knew how to use Quicksilver when away from the computer.
