A new design brewing…

Note: This post is over a year and a half old. You may want to check later in this blog to see if there is new information.

New Design Draft 1No, this probably won’t be the actual new design. But it might be the direction I’m heading. I’m feeling like doing a “designer’s” design, with a strong grid, proper line heights, nice typography and a clean layout. No 3D shadows or reflections, just nice Gestalt theory. And maybe I’ll actually get it done once I catch up with all of my client jobs that are waiting in the wings. I’m definitely not complaining about having jobs waiting in the wings, though.

I’ve managed to create a fairly seamless experience for my large client using MODx, and am growing happier with the interface the more I get used to it. It can be a little annoying at first, not being able to just use Yummy FTP and TextMate to modify plugins and core files, or even templates. But once you get used to the idea of Template Variables and other refinements, it’s a very powerful system. I plan to do a full article on exactly why it ended up being the right choice for my client, as well as release some of the custom code that came out of the project, all in the near future. But never fear, this blog will remain on Wordpress, which will always be near and dear to my heart. I missed many aspects of Wordpress whilst working in MODx. Especially some of the awesome plugins that are available. So I’ll continue to work on Wordpress development and use it for clients when it’s more appropriate.

Interesting direction you are taking. Personally I think typographic insights - based on 500 years of working with type - are underestimated by many (web)designers. I am aware that the Web differs from books - of course. But a lot of bad communication on the Net can be helped by a correct typographical treatment.
Full of anticipation about the new design - the current one is still good to go though IMHO.

    Brett,

I am struggling with using a CMS instead of a very light system like Wordpress, or just straight PHP.

I am considering MODX now, but it looks very much like Textpattern with the added AJAX look and the WHYIWYG editor built in.

Everything else seems very similar, which is good and bad. Textpattern takes a long time to customize, no FTP, all done in the interface… and a lot of similar concepts like “forms”, “pages”, “styles”… I wish it were simpler.

Have you tried Textpattern? Any advice or useful comparison?

By the way I like your site very much, and is simple old Wordpress : )

I’ve never given Textpattern a fair chance. I’ve heard great things about it. I like MODx. My one complaint is that it’s one step removed from PHP coding, and all of the code has to be done within the CMS itself. That makes me miss Wordpress.

But my clients with large sites love MODx for ease of use and I love it for extensibility and customization (and standards based web design).

    Brett,

I am doing my own business website, I think it would be the best time to try ModX, so i will… Textpattern is quite good, but the pace of development is rather slow, but is very dependable so I will stick with it for a while.

In a month or so I will share my experience comparing both.
Hopefully in my business blog at Trumpet Interactive.com

Talk to you soon : )

P.S. Very cool plugin you have to edit a comment AFTER it’s saved, could you tell me which is it?

Have your say
