WP2.1 Feed Truncation

Note: This post is over a year and a half old. You may want to check later in this blog to see if there is new information.

Well, it was pointed out to me that my RSS feeds are now being cut off at the <—more—> mark. I found the reasons (more or less) here. I’ve been using the “more” instead of creating excerpts, which is a fairly common practice. But rather than hack apart my shiny new Wordpress code, I built a plugin to let me easily post multi-paragraph excerpts from within TextMate (or from anywhere you can edit WP content). It borrows heavily from the code for “Slugger” by ChanceCube. Basically, it allows you to put a tag <excerpt></excerpt> (but with square brackets) around a section to be used as the excerpt right within the main body of the post. It’s currently set up to hide that section when displaying the post, so if you want to use it to abbreviate the intro, you have to copy the first couple of paragraphs into the tags. I’ll post the plugin in its own post later this evening.

Anyway, I’ll be changing my posting format to work around the new “rules”. I’m of the opinion that if RSS readers want to stay in their newsreader, they shouldn’t be forced to open a hundred tabs in their browser to finish reading interesting articles. I know it bugs me when I have to do it. About 80% of the feeds I read are partial feeds, and I wish there were more full feeds out there. So I’m going to continue to provide one.

I won’t be going back very far and cleaning up old posts, the new method will apply to just enough posts to fill the front page with nice excerpts ;-). Let me know how it works out for you.
