There’s a fun new website up at http://www.baekdal.com/web2dna/. It takes a given website and converts it to human DNA, the brightness and density based on the markup. The more keywords and the more semantic the markup is, the brighter and denser the map. The image included in this post is from this blog. Just for giggles, try the homepage of one of our biggest competitors in Winona. Or, *giggle*, this one.
Okay, enough mudslinging. I suppose, if I were to pontificate a little and make a valid point out of this, I would tell you that the design companies in this town with the most clients, the ones putting out the most websites and taking up the most web real estate, are using tables and Flash like crazy. They have no concern for accessibility and standards. Which leaves it up to us, the little guys, to stay strong in the face of adversity. (Raises fist in the air and sheds a single tear). I’ve been floored lately on some of the CSS galleries to see major design companies doing major sites in all CSS. And doing an amazing job of it. And the Gucci site was an example of what the future could hold for those who stay the course. Screw Flash. I can provide the necessary glitz without the accessibility issues now, and without having to code two sites. There, I pontificated.
