Myspace and DRM-Free Music

This article at Mashable just popped up around 10pm CST. Myspace is apparently planning to sell the music of 3 million unsigned bands without DRM protection, in MP3 format. This could be more of a competitor for iTunes than the whole Spiral Frog deal. Just legitimizing DRM-free MP3’s once again seems like a huge step forward, and to get back down to putting bands in direct contact with consumers is exactly what I’ve been hoping the online music vendors would do.

The way I’m seeing it right now, DRM is a lot like handgun laws. The bad guys are still going to get the guns, it’s just going to keep the honest people from having them. Not that I’m any kind of supporter of handguns, the arguments just echo the same to me. And I’m supporting any web company that is willing to sell music without DRM, even if it’s Myspace.
